
Laboratory Manager
Job Description
The Laboratory Manager has a range of responsibilities required for the proper operation of the laboratories and stockrooms of the Division of Natural Sciences & Engineering (NSE) at University of South Carolina Upstate. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: the daily and weekly preparation of chemistry and biology labs, assembling individual labs, preparing and standardizing solutions, providing inventory check of consumables, ordering expendable supplies for various labs, inspecting and stocking all lockers and stock rooms, evaluating safety equipment, and scheduling the inspection of eyewash stations, first aid kits, and spill kits. Managing the proper protocol for ordering equipment and preventative equipment agreements are required duties.
Responsibilities

Coordinate the purchase of supplies for laboratory protocols as requested by NSE faculty. Ensure that lab consumables are properly restocked.

Serve as the NSE Laboratory Safety/Biosafety Officer. Maintain OSHA Chemical Inventory, chemical hygiene plan, and Safety Data Sheets. Supervise completion of annual OSHA-mandated training for NSE faculty, staff, and student workers. Maintain safe working conditions in all science laboratories. Verify proper function of laboratory safety equipment monthly. Supervise and coordinate hazardous waste storage and removal. Supervise and train NSE student laboratory workers. Maintain safety records of students in the labs as well as accident report forms. Serve as a floor coordinator in emergency situations in Smith Building. Perform lab inspections and certify hoods annually. Identify and participate in relevant trainings about changes to federal, state and university safety, biosafety, and waste disposal regulations.

Order supplies for science laboratories. This includes the tracking of expenditures and utilizing POs and credit cards for purchases. • • Maintain records for lab fee account purchases, work with Academic and Business Affairs departments for accounting purposes, and keep apprised of annual renewal purchase orders required for NSE supplies and preventative maintenance agreements. Track budget expenditures for laboratory supplies and inventory in order to stay within budget constraints.

Support faculty and staff to improve efficiency and function of existing laboratories. This includes safety procedures and equipment upgrades necessary for increased needs of the department. Perform equipment inventory annually, dispose of equipment per University guidelines, and arrange services as needed for onsite maintenance. Maintain equipment records such as depreciation schedule and disposal forms. Work with faculty, facilities management, and vendors to maintain warranty information and coordinate repair and/or replacement of laboratory equipment.

Work with faculty to ensure the materials necessary for teaching science laboratories are available. Pick up laboratory supplies form local vendors. Preparation of solutions, stains, mixtures, and other compounds required for laboratory instruction. Work with faculty, facilities management, and vendors to maintain warranty information and coordinate repair and/or replacement of laboratory equipment.

Maintain and clean laboratories in a timely manner.
Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a science related field and at least 2 years of laboratory experience. Successful background check is required. Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
