Job Description

Position Summary:

  • Performs and reports test results for waived, moderate, and high complexity clinical laboratory procedures as assigned and as outlined in the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Demonstrates proficiency, competency, and understanding of fundamental principles of clinical laboratory procedures and performs testing with precision and accuracy.
  • Assists with additional work duties or responsibilities as evident or required. 

Primary Accountabilities:

  • Performs clinical laboratory testing for waived, moderate, and high complexity clinical laboratory procedures as assigned and as outlined in the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Escalates discrepancies to appropriate individual.
  • Operates computerized laboratory data systems/applications as assigned.
  • Reviews pending work using established protocol.
  • Operates laboratory instrumentation.
  • Identifies real and potential situations or detects equipment malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoots the problem with appropriate individual or service representative and documents appropriately.
  • Performs and documents maintenance and function/operational checks on instrumentation.
  • Communicates information including critical values to other members of the clinical team and performs required documentation.
  • Evaluates QC results for acceptability and notifies the appropriate individual of unresolved issues.
  • Monitors supply/reagent inventory and uses laboratory resources efficiently.
  • Documents receipt and opening of a supply.
  • Monitors expiration dates of all supplies and ensures adequate supplies are on hand.
  • Use project and sample management techniques to identify, develop and maintain planning tools (e.g., spreadsheets, MS Project) in support of lab project management.  


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • A minimum of an associate degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or laboratory science required.
  • 2 years lab training or experience in moderate to high complexity testing.
  • Demonstration of understanding of fundamentals of clinical laboratory procedures as evidenced by successful completion of one of following certifications: MLT (ASCP) or MLT(ASCP)cm or MLT (AMT).
  • Demonstrated experience with molecular diagnostic methods, RT-PCR and RNA extraction platforms.
  • The ability and willingness to change direction and focus to meet shifting organizational and business demands
  • The ability to effectively manage oneself, demonstrates integrity, be productive under pressure, and achieve development goals
  • Position requires typing, climbing, lifting (up to 15lbs), reaching, vision (20/20), standing (10%), sitting (90%), walking, and hearing
