Job Description

Technology transfer is the practice of transferring inventions from the research lab to the marketplace to benefit the public and requires an interesting blend of science, business, and law. The MUSC Foundation for Research Development (FRD) is seeking highly motivated individuals eager to make an impact utilizing technology transfer to transform MUSC discoveries from the laboratories into product and services that provide real-life solutions to the world’s medical needs. The Technology Transfer Associate will be involved in multiple aspects of supporting development and commercialization of research and clinical innovations, including technology evaluation for patentability and commercial potential, market research, development and execution of marketing strategies, and identification of potential industrial partners. The Associate will also be exposed to intellectual property protection, licensing, business development, startup formation, and will have opportunities to interact with many MUSC researchers, clinicians, business and legal professionals, and companies of all sizes. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in alternative scientific and engineering careers to employ their broad technical expertise in a business and quasi-legal environment while gaining experience in converting basic research into practical applications. The Associate will gain valuable skills and experience to complement their scientific training in fields such as technology transfer, consulting, patent law and business development. This is an entry-level technology transfer position that is suitable for recent graduates or individuals seeking to begin a career in the field. This position is for one year, with the possibility of extension for another 1-2 years.


  • Conduct prior art and preliminary patentability searches and analyses
  • Evaluate and write technology assessments
  • Attend meetings with MUSC inventors
  • Perform market research and analysis
  • Create non-confidential marketing materials for MUSC technologies
  • Conduct marketing campaigns
  • Assist case managers in the evaluation, management, marketing and licensing of inventions
  • Other duties as necessary


  • Bachelor’s Degree in life sciences, physics, chemistry or engineering (biomedical and mechanical), with a preference for candidates that possess post-baccalaureate training or credentials.
  • Preference for advanced and/or a professional degrees.
  • Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting.
  • Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions.
  • Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.
  • Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing 20 lbs (+/-) unassisted.
  • Lift from 36” to overhead 15 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.

  • Pay scale: MUSCP-G11: $39,330.93 – $62,846.37 (min – max)
